What does heaven look like?

Recently when I was at the Hill Cumorah with my friend Lilah one of the questions I wanted to ask people we met was: What does Heaven look like? And then I chickened out.

We had a conversation about it in the car that went something like this, “I didn’t get the chance to ask what Heaven looks like?”
No we didn’t ask that question. It’s a really personal question.
It’s a very personal question. That’s what you realize when your standing there – that is an incredibly personal question.
Yeah
That’s a question you can ask somebody once you’ve been hanging out with them for a while. It’s almost like the question you have to ask someone lying next to them in the dark. It’s that personal
Yeah it is.
And then I go too far saying, “You almost can’t look them directly in the eye”.
Lilah raises her eyebrows giving me a look, letting me know I’m crazy.
And then we both crack up.

So I’m going to ask the internets instead. I’m going to ask you – What does Heaven look like? In your dreams, in your fantasies, according to your faith? When you were a kid? What do you see when you picture Heaven? Help me with my unscientific research.

It’s not Heaven. It’s Iowa. But it’s always looked like Heaven to me.

For me, I always envisioned heaven to be the place from which I came and will return – earth itself. I love nature and feel most at home outdoors, so it’s no surprise my vision of heaven involved deep canyons, rushing rivers, soaring above clouds, and walking amongst all living creatures on the earth.

If I could enjoy an afterlife, I’d hope that I could be able to roam this planet – from the active volcanoes to shifting continental plates, I would want to see all the forces of nature in action and explore every aspect of life as we know it.

Until then, I enjoy the heaven I have here and now – a walk in the woods, hiking in mountains, rafting rivers, and enjoying the planet with all the mortal pleasures of my human senses.

    It’s a win-win situation, really. :)

Heaven is a big table – the biggest table I’ve ever seen, the length of the biggest room I’ve ever been in. My dear family members and friends each have a chair pulled up to it, and the table is full of each of our favorite dishes. The room is full of color, laughter, tears and joy. I hope heaven is just like that.

When I was little I used to imagine that Heaven was like getting a giant group hug from everyone who loved you. But that would be more what heaven feels like than looks like. Anna, I love your idea of the big table :)

An old lady once told me that heaven is a flock of butterflies.

We lose ourselves, I think, we lose our personal egos, we’re just part of the whole flock flapping our wings and glimmering, shimmering, shining, constantly shifting and un-pin-down-able.
